Health Information Management maintains records of every person who received treatment of any kind in the hospital. Every procedure, test, surgery, consultation, injection, medication and anything else happening with a patient in the hospital must be documented.

- Health Information Management also maintains statistics including births, deaths, surgeries, x-rays and lab procedures.
- Both the Business Office and the Health Information Management department operate under strict HIPAA guidelines to maintain patient privacy. A patient’s information file may be released only with written authorization from the patient.
- The department is also responsible for providing copies of records in case a patient moves out of area or changes physicians.

The Health Information Management Utilization Review
Another responsibility of Health Information Management is Utilization Review, which involves working with insurance companies and other third party payers, such as Medicare and Medicaid, to determine what coverage is in force, approving a patient’s length of stay and entering billing codes and statistical data to identify diagnosis and treatments.
